Hairdressers vs Hairstylists: What’s the Difference?

Hairdressers vs Hairstylists: What’s the Difference?

For some of you, certain beauty terms and definitions can be confusing. We can’t even blame you when we see so many professionals making the same mistakes! Luckily, we are here to help educate you. One topic we want to tackle is the difference between a hairdresser and a hairstylist. Now, we know you might be thinking, “Wait a minute, aren’t those the exact same thing?” Don’t feel bad, it’s a problem even industry professionals run into! If some hair salons don’t know the difference, how can we expect you to?

The truth is, despite being used interchangeably, hairdressers and hairstylists are NOT the same profession at all! Just because they both work with hair, doesn’t mean they can both do the same thing. Not only do they each have their own professional training, but they do completely different types of work and even handle different tools during it! For example, someone can know how to cut hair perfectly, but that doesn’t mean they automatically know how to create a perfect up-do! Don’t worry, once you’re done reading, you’ll understand why it’s important to differentiate the two.

Hairdressers

Hairdressers are in charge of processing and hair cuts, which means washing your hair, cutting your hair, applying chemical treatments and adding hair extensions. This is who you want to go to when you feel like changing up your look permanently, not just for one special event. Due to this permanent change to your hair, hairdressers might even require cosmetology licenses in some places, which can take up to two years to achieve.

At the bare minimum, they need specialized training for their profession, certificates on how to use their special products and equipments and different requirements depending on what they specialize in. You will likely find them in salons, because they use a lot of equipment and products that aren’t easily portable!

HairStylists

Meanwhile, hairstylists do exactly what their name states: style your hair! Styling hair means learning how to design hair and change up its look by creating curls, waves and volume, all without actually cutting or processing the hair. This is the person you want to go to when you need an up-do for a wedding, beautiful curls for prom or even fancy waves for professional events.

Hairstylists do not require a license to work, because they aren’t creating permanent changes in your hair. They will style it to create illusions of change in your hair, but at the end of the day, unlike a hairdresser, you can wash out any temporary changes. You will likely find them at special events such as a wedding, moving from one client to the next to create beautiful hairstyles on each one.

Not every hairdresser can style hair and not every hairstylist can do a hairdresser’s job… Which is why sometimes you might go to a hair salon and you’ll get passed from one person to another during different stages of the process. However, one person can receive professional training to do both, so they can wash, cut, process your hair, and then style it! Both of these professions require experience, creativity and hard work.

Hairstylists aren’t completely different from hairdressers, though. While they do different types of work, their skills can even be quite similar! For example, they are both handling your hair, which means both professions need to understand how to protect your hair from damage as much as they can. Whether it’s damage due to heat or chemicals, they want to keep your hair looking as shiny and healthy as possible.

Another skill they share is understanding the relation between hair types, hair styles and face shapes. The hairdresser will make sure to give you a cut that is perfect for your face shape, but also viable with your lifestyle. They will try to give you a hair cut that will suit every aspect of you. Meanwhile, the hairstylist does the same will styling your hair! They will ensure that your hairstyle looks good with your hair type, adding and reducing volume where needed and even creating waves and curls if you desire. For both of them, the most important thing is keeping the client satisfied!

Mark Holloway

Today, we want to highlight one of McAllister Spa’s massively talented hairstylists: Mark Holloway! HydraFacial + SkinCeuticals Miami’s Best Facial Experience

Voted Best Facials in Miami Beach, FL

Facial Spa
Facial Spa

Now that the HydraFacial experience is available at McAllister Spa, we’ve taken our partnership with SkinCeuticals to the next level. We have handcrafted a truly unique skincare treatment -the “Antioxidant HydraFacial by SkinCeuticals.”

This 45-minute Antioxidant HydraFacial delivers the most potent anti-aging facial treatment available in Miami, backed by the most trusted subclinical skincare line in the world.

SkinCeuticals Clean!

This customized HydraFacial treatment starts with preparing the skin to receive the maximal benefits of the HydraFacial. Eye makeup and lip color is gently removed with SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser & soft, pre-moistened gauze pads.

A small amount of Gentle Cleanser is then massaged onto a damp face and neck until your esthetician determines your skin is thoroughly clean!

HydraFacial Perfect Skin

Exfoliation is the first step, gently removing debris and dead skin cells, to reveal soft, supple skin. A mixture of glycolic & salicylic acids is then applied, delivering the benefits of a mild chemical peel without a post-peel.

The final step is where the dirt hits the road! Using HydraFacial’s patented vortex suction tip, your esthetician cleans out your pores and removes the surface debris from your skin.

SkinCeuticals “C”

Now that the HydraFacial process has revealed your flawlessly clean face, your esthetician will customize a Vitamin C masque. This facial masque contains a well-mixed combination of SkinCeuticals products such as Vitamin C Firming Masque, Equalizing Toner and Phyto Corrective Gel.  It is gently applied to your face, allowed to set and then gently removed with cool water.

Preventing Future Skin Damage

Based upon your esthetician’s evaluation of your skin’s condition, your face is primed to absorb one of several serums. A mainstay of any SkinCeuticals treatment is the use of CE Ferulic. If fine lines, uneven skin texture or wrinkles are noted, your esthetician may elect to use one of HydraFacial’s booster serums, such as Dermabuilder Boost or Growth Factor Boost.

To top of this antioxidant facial feature, your esthetician will apply SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2, finishing with Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50. And with this last step, you are ready to face the world, face refreshed and flawless.

Last 2 Steps…

On your way out, there’s only two steps left…pick up your home care regimen and book next month’s HydraFacial appointment. Discounted packages for monthly HydraFacials are available in limited quantities so ask your esthetician about these specials.

Dreisy Reyes is Miami Beach’s Best Hair Extensions Stylist

Dreisy Reyes is Miami Beach’s Best Hair Extensions Stylist

Miami: Voted best hair extensions in Miami Beach! McAllister Spa – where South Beach locals go for Miami hair-extensions, color and clip-in hair-extensions and the best service possible.

What are Hair Extensions?

So you asked us and we have Miami Beach’s best hair extensions stylist answering! While there are many types of hair extensions, the overall purpose is to add length and thickness to the hair. Hair extensions can be taped, glued, bonded, clipped, or microlinked to your natural hair. The difference between a wig and a hair extension is that a wig is placed on top of the entire head, while extensions lay on the hair roots. You must have some hair in order to have extensions, usually at least 3-4 inches.

Many people assume that all hair extensions are for adding length to a shorter cut. And while many people choose extensions for a longer look, some women with thin hair choose extensions with the same length as their natural hair to add  volume for a thicker, healthier-looking mane for those legendary nights along Lincoln Road. Because there are so many choices to suit your particular hair goals, chatting it up with Dreisy at McAllister Spa is usually best.

best miami beach hair extensions salon near me

When you are contemplating the best hair extensions near me in South Beach, there is only one place you should consider, and that is McAllister Spa Miami Beach.

What Type of Hair Extensions is Best for My Miami Beach Lifestyle?

Everybody wants great hair in Miami’s South Beach. Shine, volume, and the perfect color each go into the ‘do, but if you want longer hair, more hair, or add a pop of dimensional color, hair extensions might be for you. If you’ve never heard of extensions or just want to learn more about the different types (not all hair extensions are created equal), keep reading! McAllister Spa is one of Miami Beach’s best hair salons and they have you covered. And there’s no one better hair stylist at McAllister Spa than Dreisy Reyes.

Which is Better for Miami Beach’s Heat & Humidity – Synthetic vs. Natural Hair Extensions?

Synthetic hair is made out of plastic. It is shinier than natural hair (meaning that it is often obvious that it’s fake hair), tangles easily, cannot be dyed, and is near impossible to style. However, synthetic hair is much cheaper than genuine human hair, which is why some women opt for it in their extensions. Natural hair has normal levels of shine, doesn’t tangle as much, can be dyed, and is easily styled, but it is in a much higher price range than synthetic hair. Is it worth it? Yes. Synthetic hair cannot be styled because the plastic is formed in a permanent manner. Additionally, attempting to use a curling iron, for example, will result in a melted clump, ruining the hair and potentially your heat tool.

What are Clip-on Hair Extensions & Which Are Best to Wear in Miami Beach?

Clip-ons are the most popular type of hair extension. They are reusable, easily clipped in, and easily removed, making them popular with people who do their hair at home. Clip-ons add length, volume, and potentially a pop of color to a head with minimal effort. However, the downside is that they are not at all permanent and must be removed before going to sleep. Additionally, some people find the clips bulky, and it is challenging to complete up-dos unless you are a professional. If taken care of correctly, clip-ons can last you upwards of 6 months.

Tape-in Hair Extensions

best-miami-beach-hair-extensions-mcallister-south-beach

McAllister Spa is where Miami Beach locals go for hair extensions. Clip-in hair extensions are an effortless way to add (and remove) length and volume any time you want. It’s a perfect accessory for the fabulous and sexy South Beach lifestyle.

Tape-ins are another popular version of hair extensions. And McAllister Spa has all the best brands of tape extensions – from Bellami to Glam Seamless and from Hotheads to HairTalk. This type of hair extensions is placed similarly to clip-ons, but a professional like our very own Dreisy uses a heat-activated tape-looking glue that is stuck to the natural hair. Tape-ins are less heavy than clips and are more accessible to style. They are also semi-permanent.

The principal thing you have to watch out for is to ensure you’re not stripping the glue with hair products; you should use special shampoos and conditioners designed for extensions. Tape-in hair extensions will typically last you around 4-8 weeks, but it depends on how quickly your hair grows and how careful you are with the glue. Glue remover is used to take off the extensions, and if they are still in good condition, they can be reglued closer to the roots.

Bonded Hair Extensions

A favorite at Miami Beach’s favorite hair extensions salon are fusion/bonded/keratin extensions. They are perhaps the most natural-looking of all varieties of extension. Small hair bundles are glued via heat-activation to strands of your natural hair in discrete areas around your head. While this method might look the best, it’s also the most damaging to your natural hair and may cause hair loss, breakage, scalp irritation, or heat damage. Once you start with these extensions, you won’t want to stop.

Bonded extensions are probably the easiest to manage because you don’t have to do anything special with them. Unlike the other methods, you can style and wash your hair as usual. They also last longer, about 2-3 months, without needing to be removed and rebonded closer to the roots. And McAllister Spa works with quality brands like Cinderella Hair Extensions.

Microlink Hair Extensions

Dreisy is a big advocate for maintaining healthy hair, and sometimes a healthier alternative to bonded extensions are microlink hair extensions. Tiny strands of your natural hair are pushed through a small silicone bead with the extension. The bead is then crimped to your hair without glue or heat, making them much less damaging than microlink hair extensions. Just like bonded extensions, microlinks can be styled and washed like normal. However, you must be careful not to accidentally rip the links out with a brush or hands. These extensions will last you around 2-3 months before being uncrimped and moved up to the roots.

Weaves & Sew-in Wefts

best-miami-beach-hair-extensions-mcallister-spa-salon

When you are in Miami Beach and you contemplate “where can I get hair extensions near me” – there’s just one answer – McAllister Spa.

Technically, weaves and hair extensions are different things, but the terms are often used interchangeably. Weaves are often used for 4C and other coily hair types but can be done on anybody. The natural hair is first braided into cornrows. Then, the weave is sewn into the braids. Sew-in weft hair extensions are a variety of weave, except only one braid is made under the bulk of the hair.

The weave is sewn into the braid, leaving no trace of a tiny braid. This hair isn’t damaging since there isn’t any heat, glue, or other chemicals. With a sew-in weft, you can care for your hair as normal. Full weaves, however, are a little more complicated, and caring for them depends on the texture of your weave and natural hair. The weft extensions will last around 6-8 weeks before needing to be moved closer to the roots

How To Keep Hair From Frizzing in Florida

How To Keep Hair From Frizzing in Florida

How to Control Hair From Frizzing in Florida and Miami Beach!

  • 1. Shampoo Less Often
  • 2. Use Quality Conditioner More
  • 3. Leave Good Treatment in Over-Night?
  • 4. Less Heat (Irons & Blow Dry) & More Healing
  • 5. Protect Hair With Quality Products

While we all love summer, the season is home to a myriad of beauty challenges we often struggle to overcome. Between unsightly tan lines, painful sunburns, and enough bug bites to make a girl go insane, perhaps the most daunting challenge during the muggy months is fighting off frizzy hair.

Not to worry. With a bit of preplanning and strategic beauty routine swaps, it is possible to tame a misbehaving and frizzy mane.

We’ve tapped our top talent for their simple solutions for taming tresses in the South Florida humidity:

Spring For a Goldwell Kerasilk Treatment

Kick off the summer with smoother, more manageable strands by treating yourself to a Goldwell Kerasilk treatment. The miracle, two-component system redefines traditional keratin treatments, by making them suitable for all textures. Gone are the days of one uniform look. From curly to pin straight, depending on the way your stylist builds the formula, Kerasilk can be used to make your everyday style a little less frizzy. Best of all, the treatment lasts up to five months – enough to get you through summer and then some!

Sport a Humidity-Friendly Style

Braids are your new best friend and the secret weapon for fending off frizz. Avoid flyaways by securing your style with a touch of flexible hold wax (nobody likes hairline frizzies). DIY with one of the many YouTube tutorials out there, or (better yet) leave it to the professionals and drop by McAllister Spa’s StyleLab for a quick and simply hair braid for a budget-friendly $25 style.

Embrace Your Natural Hair Texture

Try working with your natural hair texture, not against it. Since hair has natural memory, you can blow, curl, and straighten ”˜till the end of time, but your style will immediately revert to its natural texture the moment it’s exposed to humidity. Save yourself time and a huge headache by going au naturale. For a chic, beachy style, spritz damp strands with a salt spray (try Kevin.Murphy HAIR.RESORT.SPRAY), divide hair into four sections, twist from root to end, and tie back into a low bun. Let hair loose once it’s dry to reveal effortless, South Beach-approved waves.

Practice Good Technique

If you absolutely must blow dry your own hair (never recommended but we knows it’s inevitable sometimes), be sure to do so with proper technique. A good blowout starts with the right brush. Look for a round option with dense, natural, uneven bristles, which will provide enough tension on the hair to provide smooth end results. Pull hair taut with the brush and point the dryer down the hair shaft to avoid fluffing up the cuticle. Blast with cool air to set the style and spritz with a light hold hairspray (try Kevin.Murphy SESSION.SPRAY) to lock in your hard work.

What is Balayage, ombre, sombre… Huh?

What is Balayage, ombre, sombre… Huh?

We’ve all seen this hair trend where everyone seems to achieve this perfect blend of colors in their hair… And we’re sure more than a few of you have not only wondered how to get the same look, but also what it’s even called! After all, you could struggle to ask a hairstylist to give you a new hairstyle if you don’t even know the name of it. You might even think just showing a hairstylist a few pictures of what you want will suffice, but here at our Miami Beach Spa, we think knowing the name of what you’re doing to your hair is important. After all, you’re the one that will have to look at it every single day!

With so many trends and styles, it can be a little confusing to keep up with all the terms. Let us help you out with this… We’re going to explain the difference between balayage, ombre and sombre. Before you say it, no, they’re not the same thing. And definitely no, they’re not all just called highlights! It’s easy to put a broad term on all of these styles and say they’re simply highlights, but they’re not. Each one has its own specific style and look, which we are going to talk about below.

Before we get started on each definition, we’d like to highlight the owner of our spa in Miami Beach, William McAllister. Born and raised in Florida, he has a background in neurophysiology and business. Additionally, he’s the fire captain of one of the biggest fire departments in the country. This extensive background grants him the expertise to calmly manage any emergency, whether it’s a house fire or a hair disaster!

Following in his great-great-grandmother’s footsteps, he set out to offer a world-class service comparable to her McAllister Hotel. He redefined what a regular hair salon should look like, creating the one-of-a-kind McAllister Spa. By cultivating a homey environment with incredible services, he has built a hair salon with a professional reputation that Miami Beach is proud of.

Balayage

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCuFz_4gTqn/

Now, before you come experience this spa for yourself, you should know the name of the look you want! Let’s start with the term balayage. This might be the most common one you’ve seen, but you’re not completely sure what it is or even confuse it for other styles. This coloring technique means “to sweep” in French, which means the hairstylist will freehand sweep color over swatches of hair before covering it, allowing the dye to take effect. These swatches of hair do not start at the crown of your head, instead it can start a little below it or at the middle of your head. Due to this, it creates a more natural look for your hair, since there is not harsh contrast between one color and the other. Usually, you’ll need to bleach or lighten your hair to properly create the balayage look.

This hairstyle creates a casual look and works with many different hair colors, as well as looking good on long, medium or short hair. This is a great option for anyone that isn’t interested in doing too much maintenance on their hair. This technique doesn’t require regular touch-ups at the salon. Actually, growing out your hair adds to the gorgeous effect created by the technique! If you’re low maintenance but still want to jump on this hair color blend trend, balayage might be perfect for you!

Ombre

https://www.instagram.com/p/CByCRh2g-Oc/

The next coloring technique we’re going to discuss is ombre! This hairstyle simply has an ombre of colors in your hair, which means you’ll see a gradient on your hair with the lightest color being at your ends. The balayage technique of freehand sweeping paint on your hair is used as well sometimes, to achieve that natural smooth gradient and avoid awkward harsh lines between colors. Due to this, this style looks best on curly or wavy hair. On completely straight hair, the gradient will be interrupted by bold contrasting lines of colors. After all, the smooth blend of colors gradually increasing in lightness is what ombre is all about!

Since the lightest part is at your ends, you probably only need to lighten the bottom half of your hair, depending on what color you’re going for. If it’s a natural color, there’s no need for too much bleaching. However, ombre is popular with some vibrant, wild colors, which would require all of your hair being bleached. This coloring technique requires more maintenance than balayage, since it’s easy to lose the color quickly. Vibrant colors get washed out much faster than natural colors, so keep that in mind when choosing yours! You will need to get touch-ups and get the color refreshed every once in a while, but a lot of the maintenance is on you as well! Choosing the right shampoo to maintain and refresh the color at home will be a lifesaver. You spent a lot of time and money getting this perfect hairstyle, don’t ruin it with a bad quality shampoo!

Sombre

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBLVvDJgZPb/

At last, we have a mix of our two first techniques: sombre. Subtle ombre, also called sombre, uses the balayage technique to create a more natural-looking ombre. Instead of using vibrant colors with a drastic gradient, sombre usually plays off of your natural haircolor and goes lighter, without making any intense changes. The hairstylist will start lightening swatches of hair starting mid-head, using the balayage technique. Sombre tries to create the illusion that your hair simply got lighter in the sun, as some of us like to call “sun-kissed hair”.

Sombre typically looks best with wavy or curly hair, but straight hair can also pull it off. The sombre effect will look great in any way, because it’s a more natural look than the previous options, providing a softer result. This is a low maintenance option, only needing to be retouched every few months. If you’d like, you can simply grow it out and cut off the ends to go back to your original color.

Miami Beach Hair Stylists

Our hair salon offers the most talented stylists in all of Miami Beach. If you’re looking for balayage, ombre or sombre, one of our stylists can achieve that perfect result for your hair. Extend the Lash Love with Eyelash Extensions in South Beach

Are You in Miami Beach asking “Where Are the Best Eyelash Extensions Near Me?”

Where does Miami Beach go for all things related to eyelashes? There’s only one place according to South Beach locals and that is McAllister Spa, located in an historic home on Alton Rd. Lash maintenance can take many forms – from lash tints & eyelash lifts to natural lash extensions & dramatic volume sets. Whether you are looking to subtlety enhance your lashes or add to them, there’s just only one place in SoBe to go and there is one lash technician that stands out from all the rest in Miami – Nafsika Karavisili!

Today’s post focuses on flawless lash extensions. There are many different looks that can be achieved through lash extensions, and the decision starts with WHO you choose to maintain your lashes. Nafsika hails from Greece, has been trained the world over in all things skincare and is a professionally licensed full specialist in Miami Beach. Her lash training was intensive and she practiced for hundreds of hours before she ever touched her first client. Thousands of happy lash clients later, Nafsika is truly a master at her art. She listens to each client, discusses the look that inspires them, has an honest conversation about the budget of maintaining flawless & perfect eyelashes and gets to work.

Natural Lash Extensions

Once you settle in with Nafsika, it’s time to figure out the look perfect for your schedule and budget. She categorizes lashes into one of three general categories – natural fill, mixed volume & volume sets. Natural fills blend in and fill between your natural lashes, giving a more evenly distributed lash look that enhances your natural beauty. This look takes a couple of hours to achieve during the very first visit and then a commitment to return every 14-21 days to our South Beach historic spa to fill in whatever eyelashes are naturally shed. These lashes will cause all of your friends to say “I wish I had perfect lashes like you…” so shh…don’t worry we won’t ever say anything if you won’t (…but if you do, know that referral of lash clients are rewarded! =)

Mixed Volume Eyelash Extensions

Mixed volume lash sets are for those clients in Miami Beach that want to add a little something extra to their lash look. Mixed volume adds some density to your natural eyelashes while concurrently increasing the length of your lash line. This look takes about 3 hours the first visit to complete and then a lash refill visit every 14 days or so is ideal to keep up with the look achieved with a mixed volume set of beautiful eyelashes.

3D Volume Lash Extensions

Last but definitely most are 3D volume lash extensions – this show-stopping service will make your lashes stand out! Volume lashes in Miami Beach add a tremendous amount of density to your natural eyelashes and extend the length of your natural lash line dramatically. This service takes 4 or more hours to complete but the result is definitely worth the wait. Everyone will notice your luxe lashes and you’ll be addicted to the compliments!

South Beach’s Best Lashes at Miami Beach’s Favorite Salon

There’s no better place in South Beach to get eyelash extensions than McAllister Spa and there’s not better lash extension technician in Miami than our resident expert, Nafsika. Stop in for a free consultation if you’re new to the idea of lashes or book an appointment if you’re ready to go! Fall in Love with Autumn-Inspired Manicures at McAllister Spa

Fall in Love with Autumn-Inspired Manicures at McAllister Spa

Well October is here, the fall season has arrived, and Miami Beach has thankfully re-opened (kind of) for business. Some Zoom meetings are already being replaced with socially distanced South Beach chats. So now that you’ll be within 6 feet of others for the first time in a while, let’s take a look at your manicure and assess the situation. Are your hands ready for humanity? If you are way overdue for a manicure, take a look at the perfection that is Marnie’s manicures at McAllister Spa.

Marnie is one of Miami Beach’s most popular manicurists. Her manicures are nothing short of works of art. So once you’ve made the decision to get a mani with Marnie, this will prove to be the first amazing decision of many more to make. The next pondering is what day should you visit? McAllister Spa is open every day except Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day and Marnie happens to work here – one of the elusive few South Beach nail salons that are open Sundays! To book an appointment, you can call us anytime or text us at 305-604-0550. Appointments for nails with Marnie are always a good idea as walk-in appointments with her are next to impossible.

Now the next big decision, what sort of manicure is right for you? Our classic manicure & pedicure option is a good starting point. This manicure using regular polish and includes a salt scrub from Mas Skinfood – made just for you by Marnie using fractionated coconut oil and Oregon Tilth-certified essential oils.  This is the ideal nail option for those that are looking for a weekly appointment to keep your hands & feet looking perfect.

If you need something that is a bit more durable, the tried and true option of a gel polish manicure is where Marnie does some of her best work. Gel polish manicures – using OPI Gel or Gelish! – last for weeks. So if you are going to back to work in the hospitality or bar industry here in South Beach, this the definitely the best choice for you. This nail service is perfect for a visit with Marnie every other week at McAllister Spa

We’ve left Marnie’s best and definitely most popular mani service for last in this little discussion. Marnie excels at powder-dip nails. Her work is pure perfection! McAllister Spa uses OPI powder dip products and SNS acrylic powder dip. These powder-powered manicures are incredibly indestructible. We’ve even seen a few outlast quarantine and return 2 months later for removal and replacement! These powder dip products include naturally-derived ingredients and have actually been proven safe for your nails over time. Marnie’s favorite benefit to your nails is, unlike traditional acrylic nail enhancements, powder dip manicures are completely removed each time and replaced. It gives your natural nails a momentary opportunity to breath and a second for you to assess your nail health to ensure there’s no problems quietly lurking underneath with your natural nails.

The last thing to consider since you’re probably WAY overdue for a manicure is a post-pandemic pedi. If your hands have been feeling neglected these past few months, we’re sure your feet could use at least as much attention! And according to Marnie, you have to decide between two pedicures – the classic pedicure or the Gelish! pedi option. The classic pedicure includes the same infamous Mas Skinfood scrub and your choice of regular nail polishes from the likes of Essie and OPI. The highlight of this pedicure may be the perfect polish by Marnie, but what will keep you coming back again and again is the short massage included of your feet and calves. If you are looking for a pedicure that can take worst that South Beach sand can throw at you, you have to upgrade the pedi experience to our Gelish! option. Gel polish nails are pretty durable and brilliantly colored. And as we head into the autumn months and holiday season, the reason to celebrate will multiply and the number of open-toe shoe events will rapidly increase!

Whatever you’ve been through so far in 2020, with any luck, this coronavirus will begin to fade into Miami Beach’s rear-view mirror as we approach Thanksgiving & the holiday season. And Marnie is here for you at McAllister’s nail salon…take a moment to text or call us to book you ASAP.

UPDATE: WE ARE OPEN!

As we all know, our world is going through a crisis right now. COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus, has impacted every aspect of our lives. Many businesses have been forced to close their doors until everything settles down, and our hair salon in Miami Beach is no exception.

At our McAllister Spa, our clients and employees deserve nothing but the best. For your safety and for ours, our business has been stalled during these uncertain times and we know this has been difficult for all of us. We thank you for being understanding about this situation.

Reopening in May

In South Beach, we are hoping to open businesses back up some time in May. With nothing being too certain right now, everyone must take this one day at a time and can’t plan too far ahead. We understand how frustrating this must be, but it’s in everyone’s best interest.

However, we know you must be anxious to get back in our salons! Most of us, if not all, are ready for all of this to be behind us and for life to get back to normal. For some of you, that means getting your hair done again, your roots retouched, nails, brows, lashes, pretty much just a whole makeover.

Safety Precautions

When Miami Beach opens again, you can’t just rush back into your old life, no matter how badly you want to. Certain safety protocols must be followed, for everyone’s safety! The longer we maintain these safety protocols, the quicker we can go back to normal. If they aren’t followed, we will find ourselves right back in the same situation or worse!

Wearing Masks

After businesses open again, it is still imperative that everyone wears a form of covering over their nose and mouth when outside of their home. These coverings can be any type of cloth covering, such as homemade masks, scarves, bandanas or handkerchiefs. However, these do not fully protect you, so it is important to still social distance yourself from anyone else that may be outside as well.

Washing Hands

The best way you can help the world right now is by staying home and following safety precautions. This means washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after you come home. If you’re out, you can use alcohol-based hand sanitizer, though it must have at least 60% alcohol. Despite your frequent hand washing, you should still avoid touching your face, more specifically your mouth, nose and eyes.

Disinfect Surroundings

Aside from washing your hands often, it’s necessary to clean and disinfect regularly touched objects and surfaces with a cleaning spray or wipe. Some examples include your phone, doorknobs, light switches, counters, dining tables, laptops, etc. If you touch it various times on a daily basis, it needs to be cleaned.

Avoid Sick People

If you know anyone that is sick, avoid any contact with them. If it’s not possible, maintain your distance and wash your hands after interacting. If you are the one who is sick, use tissues to cover your cough or sneeze and throw them away afterwards.

If you have any symptoms at all, stay away from others. A fever, cough or just feeling under the weather? Stay home and ride out the sickness. If your symptoms progress to a severe state, then go to a hospital. Until that point, you should not go outside nor have any contact with anyone.

Cautious Traveling

Travelling anywhere is not recommended, whether it’s nationally or internationally. Staying home is your safest bet to beating this pandemic, as well as only going out to restock on groceries. Anyone arriving in Miami due to essential travel must quarantine in their homes for a period of 14 days after they have arrived in the state. This will prevent any further spreading within Miami.

Any violation of these orders can be punishable by imprisonment or a fine, so it’s best to just follow the orders to avoid further spreading of this virus. We are all responsible for keeping ourselves and everyone around us safe.

Our McAllister stylists thank you for hanging in there. We can’t wait to get back to work and see all of your faces again. Until then, stay home and stay safe!

What’s Next for Your Nails, Miami Beach peeps!

Nails are the perfect canvas for self-expression. They can feel like the perfect finishing touch to an outfit, a simple way to extend your personal style without going overboard on accessories. So what’s “in” and what’s “out” for 2021? We’ve rounded up our top three predictions to keep you current on the chicest trends in nails.

Prediction: Moody Metallics

The chrome craze is on the rise and here to stay. Easily adding an element of dimension to any nail art design, McAllister’s nail techs are experimenting with new ways to repurpose these multi-dimensional pigments to create something truly unique. One of our favorite trends for Spring is metallic contouring.

Much like contouring on the face, our artists are taking to this technique to create similar optical illusions of the nail for added shape and dimension – think: uplift through light, narrowing via dark, and inside linings for depth. Not ready to go full-on contoured tips? Dip your toes into the trend by opting for a simple, sparkling rim around the nail’s edge for a dainty, subdued take on the trend.

While we love playing with pigment to trick the mind, we never underestimate the power of the more traditional monochromatic look. Single-hued, colorful chrome digits make a serious statement in their own right in a more understated way.  Check out both of these trends at McAllister

Prediction: Revival of the Almond

If you thought picking your polish was the toughest manicure decision you’ll have to make… think again, beautiful! Nail shape sets the tone for the entire look to follow. While square tips and naturally rounded nails were a hit in 2016, it looks like their popularity is waning for the new year.

As sported by a slew of trendsetting celebs including the omnipresent Kylie Jenner, almond-shaped nails (a European mainstay) are making a resurgence for 2021. The style, which tapers tips to a slight point at the end of an otherwise elongated, natural nail, is regarded as the chicest, most glamorous of the shapes, known to slenderize fingers to best show off a handful of your finest jewelry.

Prediction: Rise of the SNS Manicure

Touted as the ultimate manicure hack for longer-lasting color, SNS (also referred to as dip powder) crushes its gel mani counterpart in the longevity of wear department. During the SNS manicure process, your nail tech paints a clear coat on each nail, dips it into a tinted powder and sets it, resulting in nails with serious staying power (two to four weeks!) without the permanence or damage of acrylics.

The treatment does not require the use of controversial UV lamps to set, and is formulated without the use of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene and DBP. The removal process is quick and easy (simply soak nails in acetone and slip off) and the SNS formulas are fortified with Calcium, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, D3 & B5, meaning that not only will the treatment not harm your nails, it could actually leave them longer, stronger and ready for round two!

Yulia Tyan is South Beach’s Best Blonde Hair Colorist

Yulia Tyan is South Beach’s Best Blonde Hair Colorist

There are so many different names for blonde highlighting techniques tossed around in Miami Beach’s best hair salons. Each way of achieving blonde hair color is slightly different in approach, but the result is nearly always a brighter and blonder hair color at the end of a visit. If you are contemplating a visit to a local beauty salon to achieve a single color of blonde hair, the decisions abound as the term “blonde” is merely the starting point of a beautiful and wide-ranging hair Goldwell color palette. It is so important to pick a hair colorist like Yulia Tyan you can trust – a beauty professional who is very well-educated and dedicated to realizing your perfect look.

Hues of blonde range from deep, chestnut blonde colors to light honey color blondes at the darker end of the spectrum; it extends all the way through the range to the lightest varieties of blondes. At the lighter end of the blonde color range is where some subtle hair color fun can happen. Very light, platinum shades of blonde can be shifted with hair color overlays, exclusive to our beauty salon, to emphasize light golden blondes or can shift your hair into an entirely different color range, with nearly any other color you can imagine, with violet or rose tones being very popular of late. Having a consultation with a hair stylist like Yulia at McAllister Spa, widely known as South Beach’s best hair salon, is key to picking the right blonde color to match your skin tone, your eyes and your smile.

If the goal is not a single shade of blonde, the choice in variations in blonde highlighting can lead to selfie-perfect beautiful result that is uniquely you. Hair colorists at McAllister – like the acclaimed Yulia Tyan – emphasize hair color consultations at the outset to see what suits you and your style, along with your schedule and budget. Highlights go by many names, from balayage to ombre and from babylights to spotlights. The recent rage is air-touch highlights and the results Yulia has produced using this highlighting technique are show-stopping gorgeous. She will tell you that traditional foil highlights are precisely beautiful but require a commitment to regular appointments. If you aren’t quite so structured in your calendar, she will likely steer you toward one of nearly a dozen blonde balayage techniques. These techniques allow for you to visit a bit more irregularly without the obvious lines of regrowth, with inches of naturally darker hair telling the world like rings of a tree how long it’s been since your last visit to the hair salon.

Take a moment to appreciate Yulia Tyan’s amazing blonde work in the recent images inside our hair salon. Her work is nothing short of perfection in our eyes. When it’s time for an appointment with her, send us a text at 305-604-0550. If you would like to schedule a virtual consult via Facetime, particularly during COVID, send us an email by clicking this link and she will reach out ASAP.
