Why Dip Holds Up in Miami Beach
Salt water, sunscreen, and a pool most afternoons are hard on a manicure. Powder dip is the finish that shrugs them off: the color is layered and sealed rather than painted, so there is no edge to chip and nothing for chlorine to lift. It cures in air, with no lamp, and it comes out thinner than acrylic and harder than gel, which is what a nail that splits or bends needs.

- Color built up in thin layers of pigmented powder, each sealed with a bonding resin, then shaped, buffed and finished with a top coat. No UV lamp, no liquid monomer. The result is harder than gel and thinner than acrylic, which is why it wears three to four weeks without chipping for most people.
- How much is a dip manicure at McAllister Spa?
- An SNS dip manicure is $65. Soak-off removal of a previous dip set is $10. Sculpted tips with dip are priced at the consultation because length and shape change the work. Every price on our menu is a starting price.
- Dip or gel — which lasts longer?
- Dip, usually. Gel is cured under light for a glossy, flexible finish that lasts two to three weeks. Dip is harder and thicker in the best sense, and three to four weeks is typical. Gel wins on flexibility and on a very natural, thin look; dip wins on durability and on nails that split or bend.
- Does dip damage your nails?
- Dip does not. Removal does, when it is rushed. The damage people blame on dip almost always comes from prying or filing it off. Ours is a soak-off: the layers are broken with a file, the nail is wrapped in acetone, and the powder lifts on its own. It takes longer and it is the reason your nails are still yours after six months of dip.
- Can I get a refill on dip?
- No, and be wary of anyone who offers one. Dip is not built to be filled like acrylic; new powder over old lifts and traps moisture. Each visit is a soak-off and a fresh set, which is also why every set looks like the first one.
