1. Bring photos — even imperfect ones

A picture beats ten minutes of description. Bring two or three photos of hair you love, and — this is the underrated one — a photo of hair you don't want. Your stylist learns as much from the second pile as the first. Don't worry that the photo's hair texture isn't yours; part of the free consultation is an honest translation of the look onto your actual hair.

2. Come as you actually live

If you air-dry and go, don't arrive freshly blown out. Your stylist should see your hair the way it spends most of its life, because that's the hair the cut has to work on Tuesday morning — not just under salon lights. Same for products: mention what you genuinely use, even if the answer is "nothing."

3. Tell the whole color history
