Growing your hair out is mostly an exercise in tolerating a length you didn't choose. The instinct is to do nothing and wait. That instinct is what makes the process take longer than it should.
Hair grows at the root and breaks at the ends
This is the whole problem in one sentence. Growth happens at the scalp at a rate you cannot meaningfully change from a salon chair. Length, though, is growth minus breakage — and breakage is the part that's actually under your control.
Ends that are splitting don't stay put. A split travels up the strand, and hair that snaps mid-length costs you more than a trim would have. This is why "I'm growing it out so I've stopped getting it cut" so often produces hair that hasn't gotten longer in a year.
Trim less, but do trim
The move isn't no haircuts. It's smaller, more purposeful ones — enough to take off compromised ends and keep the shape from collapsing, not enough to fight your progress. Tell your stylist the goal explicitly. "I'm growing it out, take the minimum" is a completely different instruction from "just a trim," and a good stylist will work to it.
A women's haircut with a stylist blow dry starts from $125, and it's worth booking with the growing-out plan stated out loud so the shape is cut to grow into rather than out of.
Protect the structure
If you color, this matters more. Lightening breaks bonds inside the strand, and weakened hair breaks at the ends — which is precisely the thing standing between you and length. The Olaplex Bond Multiplier Service is a $50 add-on to color services, working during the chemical process when the damage is actually happening. We've written about the chemistry behind it.
If your hair is stretchy when wet, that's the warning sign, and it's worth addressing before you keep lightening.
The unglamorous habits
Heat is cumulative. Fewer hot tools, lower settings, and heat protectant when you do use them. Wet hair is fragile — be gentler with it than feels necessary, and detangle from the ends upward rather than dragging from the roots. Tight elastics in the same spot every day create a weak point that eventually snaps. Silk or satin at night genuinely reduces friction.
None of this is exciting. All of it compounds.
Extensions as a bridge, not a surrender
The honest option people underuse: extensions let you skip the awkward phase entirely while your own hair keeps growing underneath. Tape-in placement with Hotheads starts from $499 for 10 to 16 inches, with maintenance and re-tape from $399. They're not a permanent commitment — they're a way to like your hair during the months it's between lengths.
If you're growing out a short cut specifically, this is often the answer to "how do I get through the next six months." Our extensions page covers the differences between tape-in, keratin-bond and I-tip, and we carry Bellami, Hotheads and Cinderella.
Styling the in-between
Some of the awkward phase is genuinely a styling problem with a styling solution. A blowout starts from $70 and can make a length you dislike read as intentional. So can a shape adjustment that costs nothing extra — asking your stylist how to wear it for the next two months is free advice most people never request.
