What Makes a Haircut "Precision"

"Precision cut" is on every salon's website including ours, which makes it nearly useless as a signal. Here is what the phrase should actually describe.

It starts before any hair is cut

The technical part of a haircut is the decision-making, not the scissors. A stylist reads your hair's density, its growth pattern, where it cowlicks, how much weight it can carry, and how it behaves dry rather than wet. That reading is what determines whether a shape will hold.

This is why a good cut begins with a conversation and often with your hair dry — because wet hair lies about what it does. Curl in particular hides completely under water, which is why our curly specialists ask you to arrive with your hair worn the way you actually wear it.

Sectioning, elevation, tension

The three variables that determine a cut, and the reason two stylists produce different results from the same instruction.

Sectioning is how the head is divided. Elevation is the angle hair is held away from the head, which controls where weight sits — low elevation keeps weight, high elevation removes it. Tension is how tightly hair is held while cut; uneven tension produces uneven length once everything relaxes.

Precision means those three are deliberate and consistent rather than improvised. It is not about cutting slowly.

The test is six weeks later

Any competent stylist can make hair look good on the day, with a blow-dry and product doing much of the work. The real test is week six: does the shape still make sense as it grows, or has it collapsed into something you fight every morning?

A cut designed to grow out well sometimes looks less dramatic on day one. That is a trade worth understanding before you sit down, and worth saying out loud if longevity matters more to you than immediate impact.

What it costs here

A women's haircut with a stylist blow dry starts from $125 with a Senior stylist, $145 with a Master, and $165 with a Director. A men's cut starts from $65. A stylist shampoo and blowout on its own is from $70.

The level difference is experience, not a different technique or product. A straightforward shape is well served at Senior level; a complicated head of hair, a big change, or a cut you want to grow out over months is where a Master or Director earns the difference.
