Dip or Gel? The Honest Answer for Miami Hands

Ask a nail technician in Miami Beach which lasts longer, dip or gel, and you will get the same answer in every chair: dip. Ask which one you should get, and the answer gets more interesting.

What each one actually is

Gel is a polish cured under a lamp. It goes on thin, flexes with the nail, and comes out glossy in a way nothing else quite matches. For most people it holds two to three weeks before the edges give.

Powder dip is color built up in thin layers of pigmented powder, each one sealed with a bonding resin. No lamp, no liquid monomer. The result is harder than gel and thinner than acrylic, and it wears three to four weeks without chipping for most people. On our menu an SNS dip manicure is $65; a gel manicure is $49.

Which one Miami is harder on

Salt water, chlorine, sunscreen and sand are a stress test for a manicure, and they find the edges of gel first. Dip has no painted edge to lift, so a week at the beach tends to leave it exactly where it was. If you swim most days, dip. If you want the thinnest, most natural look and you are not in the water, gel.

The other case for dip is the nail itself. Nails that split, peel or bend do better under the harder shell; gel follows the bend and cracks with it.

The part that decides everything: removal

Every horror story about dip is a story about removal. Dip does not damage nails. Prying or filing it off does. The right way is a soak-off: the top layers are broken with a file, each nail is wrapped in acetone, and the powder lifts on its own. It adds twenty minutes and it is not optional here. Removal is $10 on our menu, and it is the ten dollars that keeps your natural nails yours.

Two more rules that follow from that. Dip is never refilled; new powder over old traps moisture and lifts, so every visit is a soak-off and a fresh set. And if you are coming from another salon's dip or gel, say so when you book, because the removal is what takes the time.
