Choosing a Nail Color That Works in Miami

Shade cards are designed for a showroom, and your hands are going to spend the next three weeks in Miami sun, salt water and chlorine. Those are different problems.

What we use

We work in Essie and OPI for polish, and Gelish for gel. Between them they cover the range most people actually want, and all three are formulated well enough that the color you leave with is the color you keep rather than one that turns in a week.

What each system costs and how long it holds

A Classic Manicure is $23–$28 depending on technician level, and a Classic Pedicure is $49–$59. That is regular polish: the widest color range, the easiest to change your mind about, and the shortest wear.

A Gelish gel manicure is $49–$65, and a Gelish pedicure is $59–$69. Gel is cured under light and wears substantially harder — it is the right answer for a wedding, a vacation, or any two-week stretch where you do not want to think about your hands. Removal is $5–$10, and it should be a removal rather than a peel; picking gel off takes the top layer of nail with it.

Small things worth knowing: a French polish add-on is $5, a Gelish polish upgrade starts at $20, and nail art starts at $4 a nail.

Picking a shade for this climate

Sun fades dark polish faster than pale. Deep reds and navies are the first to go dull, particularly on toes that live in sandals. If you want a dark shade to last, gel holds its depth much better than regular polish does.

Chlorine and salt are hard on the edges. Both dry the nail and the skin around it, which is where a manicure visibly ages first — not the color, the cuticle. If you are in the water regularly, a Paraffin Treatment at $25 does more for how the manicure looks at week two than a different shade would.

Sheer and nude shades hide growth. A pale, low-contrast color at the base means the grow-out line is invisible for a week longer than a saturated one, which effectively buys you an extra week between appointments.

Bright coral, warm pinks and clean whites do what people come to Miami for. They read well against tanned skin and they photograph well in strong sun, which is not true of every shade that looks beautiful indoors.

The seasonal part, honestly

Winter here is not winter. The deep plums and dark chocolates that anchor a northern winter collection sit oddly against a December in which it is 78 degrees and you are outdoors — they can look wonderful, but they are a deliberate contrast rather than a seasonal default. Miami's version of a winter shade tends to be a richer, warmer take on the same colors that work all year.

The practical version: pick for what your hands are doing, not for the month.
